I chose to become a therapist because there is nothing like watching people take their pain and adversity and turn it into strength and purpose. I did not always want to be a therapist. It wasn’t until my own health crisis happened that I decided that my calling was to help people.

The reason I started Healthfit Counseling and why I am so passionate about working with my clients is because of what I learned during my own adversity and painful experiences. When I was 21 years old, I was diagnosed with metastatic cancer that had spread into my lymph nodes. What followed were very aggressive and relentless chemotherapy treatments, multiple surgeries, and the subsequent battle with opiate abuse and dependence that lasted multiple years. Before these two life-altering phases in my life, I was one who would continuously hide from failure (and success) and would spend a lot of time and energy trying to portray myself as having it all together instead of using that energy to actually live a fulfilling and purposeful life. I didn’t have a belief in myself or my instincts and chose to accept mediocrity, so nothing great was expected from me.

After surviving my battle with cancer and overcoming the even more arduous struggle with substance abuse, I felt something that I had never felt before. I give credit to a counselor I saw back when I was battling with substance abuse because this question changed my life. She asked me, after beating cancer and drug addiction, what could actually stop me in life moving forward? From that day on, I experienced what it was like to approach every day knowing that nothing could stop me except ME.

It was those experiences that led to me adopting a growth-mindset and solution-focused approach to counseling. I have worked in the mental health profession for several years, and when you combine absolute accountability with a solution-focused mentality, you will feel more empowered and confident than you ever have. It is truly amazing when I get to witness when our client’s come to the realization that they have so much more control and power over their mental health and life than they ever thought they could.

I was raised by a single mom for most of my life and I was extremely fortunate to be raised by a parent who modeled the mentality that no matter what cards you are dealt, you can either sit and wait for life to deal you better cards or you can take the cards you have and learn to play the game better. I quickly learned that option 2 was the only option; which was exemplified when I was going through my cancer treatment. My mother was my primary caregiver and would drive me to treatment every day and would be there whenever I needed anything. Even more amazing is that she had thyroid cancer when she was taking care of me during my treatment. There was no way that I was going to lose that battle watching her carry us both through cancer. It was at that moment that I realized how beneficial our pain and adversity can be…if we choose to use it.

Why I Went Into Private Practice?

I have worked for both non-profit agencies and hospital systems and realized just how much red tape there was. I started Healthfit Counseling to help as many people as possible without having to waste time navigating through all of the red tape; which allowed us to focus on what is most important…helping people.
